What A Food Manacturing Facility Needs For A Permanent Site For Seasonal Boiler Rentals

Posted on

If you manage a food manufacturing facility that ramps up for seasonal production, you may need to supplement your current boiler system to meet the increased demands. Boilers provide the heat that is needed for cooking and processing of foods in your facility. If your permanent boiler is not substantial enough, supplement it with a rental boiler.

Since this demand is ongoing from year to year but only needed seasonally, it's a good idea to prepare a permanent location for the temporary rental boiler. Here's what you need to know.

Size & Location

The ideal location for a temporary boiler is alongside the permanent one. The reason for this is because it will be easier for the rental company to connect all the necessary components, such as the fuel line and power source so the rental unit can operate to meet the requirements of heat input capacity. And of course, the pipes that provide the heated water to your facility are readily available as well.

Your facility's mechanical engineer can determine the size that is needed for the rental boiler based on the seasonal demands of your facility. It's important to determine the location for the rental boiler based on its size as well as to meet the federal requirements for emissions control.

Concrete & Site Access

After the location and size is determined, it's a good idea to provide a stable ground that can support the weight of the boiler. This can be done by installing a concrete pad. The rental company can give you weight and dimensions of the boiler rental. Pass this information on to the concrete contractor so he or she can determine the appropriate thickness and size of the concrete pad.

If, however, a concrete pad will not work for your location, the boiler will need to be placed evenly on concrete blocks so it will not sit directly on the ground. Without this, the boiler rental will be susceptible to failure due to improper drainage and an unstable or uneven ground.

There will need to be an access way to the concrete pad so an equipment hauler can deliver the temporary boiler. Typically, boiler rentals are delivered via a semi truck and trailer and may be positioned into place with a forklift.

Overhead Shelter & Wind Protection

Since the temporary boiler will be placed outdoors, it will be important to protect it from weather elements, especially snow. An accumulation of snow on top of the boiler will likely reduce the boiler's effectiveness in providing heat to keep the water temperature stable within your facility. An overhead shelter can be similar to a carport that is opened on all sides.

However, if the location is in an area where wind is a concern, the sides may need to be enclosed to keep the wind away from the boiler. At the same time, it's important to keep the vents of the boiler from being blocked. Therefore, if the wind protection panels of the structure will be near the vents, make sure the panel is perforated. Contract with a metal fabrication company to make panels with strategically placed holes for ventilation and openings for the mechanical components.

Of course, you'll also need to keep in mind that a forklift will place the boiler in the shelter. For this reason, you'll be unable to completely enclose the shelter unless one panel is removable for the delivery and removal processes. Given all the various concerns, it's a good idea to include a boiler rental company representative in the planning and building stages for the permanent site for the temporary boiler.
